It’s a steep climb, so do this first thing in the morning when the mountain air is still cool. Right at the base, there’s a free outdoor living-history museum replicating an 1890s mountain farm that is incredible for photos.
This is widely considered the absolute best sunset photography spot on the northern end of the Parkway. Pull in about 30 minutes before golden hour, bring a blanket, and sit right on the rock ledge.

Cruising into the southern Virginia border, where the landscape flattens into gorgeous high-altitude meadows and historic musical roots.
On summer Sunday afternoons, local musicians gather on the grass under the trees for completely free, live Appalachian old-time and bluegrass jam sessions. It’s an authentic cultural experience you can't buy.

Walk the short "Roots of American Music" exhibit inside—it's entirely free. Afterward, grab a seat on the outdoor amphitheater benches to hear local artists playing traditional fiddle and banjo music.

Day 3: Entering the North Carolina Crags
This section takes you through the most dramatic engineering marvels and highest suspension bridges in the region.
Don’t just drive over it. Park at the visitor center and hike the short boardwalk section of the Tanawha Trail to Rough Ridge. It gives you a spectacular view looking back at the viaduct winding around the mountain.
