I like having a set of files and buffers.
I always start by shaping the nails with a hand file. It gives a nice base shape before anything else, and beginners will find it easier to control than electric tools at first.

After filing, I lightly dust nails with baby powder to remove oils and moisture. This helps the gel or base coat stick better, and prevents lifting later

Next, I gently push back the cuticles. Doing this carefully creates a clean edge for the gel. Beginners should go slowly to avoid hurting the skin.
Cuticle Pusher
I use an electric file to gently smooth the cuticles and remove any leftover dead skin. It makes the nail bed neat and ready for base coat. Beginners should use a low speed and small bit for safety.
Nail Drills for beginners
After smoothing, I trim any excess cuticle or hangnails. This step makes the nails look clean and professional. Be careful as a beginner — just trim what’s necessary.
