This is the exact system I use when my toddler is melting down. Starting with quick distractions, then calming tools, and things that help prevent the next one. These have made a huge difference for us.

Stop the tantrum FAST (distraction mode)
When a meltdown is starting, I grab one of these immediately. These are my go-to distractions that snap him out of it long enough to reset.
I pull this out mid-meltdown and it instantly grabs his attention. Watching it expand and collapse is weirdly calming and distracts him long enough to reset. This is a public tantrum lifesaver.
2PCS Expandable Colorful Inflatable Magic Ball
These are perfect for redirecting energy when he’s starting to spiral. He’ll shake, flip, and watch them instead of escalating. I keep one in the car, diaper bag, and living room.
JOYIN 4-Pack Fidget Tubes Sensory Toys
These are AMAZING for releasing frustration. When he wants to hit or throw, I hand him one of these instead and it gives him a safe way to get that energy out.
Bingole 4PCS Mesh Squishy Stress Balls
This is one of those toys that actually holds their attention. The popping + texture combo is super soothing and helps bring the intensity down during a meltdown.

Cevioce Easter Basket Fidget Slug Toys 3Pcs
Calm Their Body Down (Regulation Tools)
Once things start slowing down, these help him actually calm his body instead of jumping right back into another meltdown.
This is my go-to when emotions are BIG. The weight is super calming and helps my toddler settle down way faster than just talking it out. It’s like a hug they can hold onto when they’re overwhelmed.
Turtle Weighted Stuffed Animal 22" 4.5 lbs
We use this in our calm-down corner so he has a soft, safe place to go when he’s overwhelmed instead of feeling punished.
Ophanie 4Ft Blue Round Plush Kids Rug
This is our designated calm blanket, he’ll grab it when he’s upset and it helps him settle way quicker.
Sivio 2lbs Weighted Lap Blanket, Navy Blue
I turn this on when things start escalating and it instantly shifts the energy. It’s part of our calm-down routine now.
Hatch Go Portable Sound Machine for Kids
Teach Them Emotions (So It Gets Better Over Time)
These have helped my toddler learn how to understand and express his feelings, which has made a huge difference in preventing tantrums.
I started using this to help him actually NAME what he’s feeling instead of just screaming. It’s simple but it’s been huge for teaching emotional regulation early.
Feelings Chart - SEL, Autism, ADHD Tools
I made a little ‘calm-down corner’ with these and it changed the vibe of tantrums completely. Instead of punishment, it gives them a place to regulate and feel safe.
This helped SO much with transitions (which is when most tantrums start). I set it before cleanup, leaving the park, bedtime, everything. Seeing time run out visually = way fewer battles.

Books That Actually Help (Not Just Cute Stories)
We read these during calm moments so he knows what to do BEFORE the next meltdown happens.
This one walks them through calming down step-by-step, which is SO helpful because toddlers don’t just ‘know’ how to do that. We read it a lot and then use it in real moments.
Calm-Down Time (Toddler Tools® Board Books)
We read this during calm moments, not just during tantrums. It’s helped reinforce boundaries in a way he actually understands, and I’ve noticed a real difference.
Hands Are Not for Hitting (Board Book)
If you have pets or younger siblings this is a must. It teaches gentle behavior in a super simple, toddler-friendly way that actually sticks.
Tails Are Not for Pulling (Board Book)
My Sanity Savers (For Me, Not Them 😅)
Because sometimes I’m the one overstimulated too. These help me stay calm so I can actually handle the tantrum without losing it.
These are a lifesaver when the noise gets to be too much. I can still hear what’s going on, but it takes the edge off so I don’t feel instantly overwhelmed.
LYSIAN Ultra Soft Foam Earplugs 38dB SNR 60 Pairs
This is my tiny reset moment. The scent + texture instantly calms me down when I’m overwhelmed. Takes 5 seconds but makes me feel human again.
L'OCCITANE 20% Organic Shea Butter Hand Cream
Hot coffee during a tantrum feels like a personality trait at this point 😅 This keeps it warm way longer so I actually get to enjoy it instead of reheating it 5 times.
I didn’t realize how much dehydration was making everything worse until I started actually drinking water consistently. This makes it easy because I can sip one-handed while holding a toddler
I keep one of these on all the time. When I’m getting overstimulated, I spin it instead of snapping. It’s subtle but makes a huge difference
MUCAL 8pcs Stainless Steel Fidget Rings
I didn’t expect to love this as much as I do, but it’s SO satisfying to squeeze. It’s like instant stress relief when everything feels chaotic.
Schylling NeeDoh Nice Cube Sensory Toy
This is my low-key fidget when I feel myself getting overwhelmed. It keeps my hands busy so I don’t react out of frustration. Super satisfying and honestly helps me stay calm.
Metal Magnetic Fidget Slider Toy for Adults
These are my emergency snack when I’m overstimulated and haven’t eaten. If my blood sugar drops while my toddler is melting down… it’s game over. These save me every time.
