A collapsible light reflector or diffuser can reduce harsh shadows on the face, giving that pro look. And, they take up almost no space in your pack. Try it for more complimentary pictures.
If you don't happen to have one with you, you can use a table cloth, a newspaper whatever is light in color to reflect some light onto the face.
One more option is to use the flash on your camera or phone. This can fill in harsh shadows, too!
