A practical baby registry built around the things I actually reached for during those first few months — feeding, sleep, diapering, getting out of the house, clothing, and everyday baby care. You really don’t need every gadget marketed to new parents...

Baby Registry Must-Haves for Feeding

Feeding takes up a huge part of newborn life, whether you breastfeed, pump, formula feed, or do a combination. I’d start with a few practical basics and add more once you figure out what works for you and your baby.

Cassandra Gonzales profile picture
I used Philips Avent bottles and liked the wide nipple shape, especially while switching between breast and bottle. I’d still avoid buying a giant supply of any one bottle before you know what your baby prefers.

We also used Dr. Brown’s bottles. They have more parts to clean, but they became a regular part of our feeding setup, especially during the combo-feeding stage.

Buy more burp cloths than you think you need. I went through these constantly during the newborn stage and liked having them scattered around the house wherever I usually fed the baby.

A nursing pillow is one of those simple things that can make long feeding sessions much more comfortable. It can also be useful for supporting your arms even if you’re bottle feeding.

A dedicated drying rack kept bottles and all the little feeding parts from taking over the entire kitchen counter. I like this style because all the odd-shaped pieces can stand wherever they fit.

I sterilized bottles daily in the beginning, and having a machine that dried everything too made the routine much easier. Definitely more of a convenience item, but one I got a lot of use out of.

I leaked a lot once my milk came in, so nursing pads were absolutely necessary for me. These stayed in place well and were easy to keep in my diaper bag too.
Lansinoh Stay Dry Disposable Nursing Pads, 100

I bought this after realizing how much milk I was leaking from the opposite side while nursing. It lets you save some of that milk instead of losing it to a nursing pad — I wish I’d had it sooner.

Baby Registry Must-Haves for Sleep

Newborn sleep can be unpredictable, but you really don’t need a room full of sleep gadgets. I’d focus on a safe sleep space, a few backups for inevitable laundry, and the handful of things that actually make nights easier.

Cassandra Gonzales profile picture
A bedside bassinet can make those constant newborn wake-ups easier because baby is right next to you without sharing the bed. This is the type of bigger registry item I’d choose based on your room and available space.

Not exciting, but very useful. Having an extra waterproof layer means a middle-of-the-night spit-up or diaper leak doesn’t turn into a full bedding emergency.

I’d register for at least a couple fitted bassinet sheets so you always have a clean backup ready when one inevitably ends up in the wash.
Muslin Bassinet Sheets 2 Pack, Cotton Fitted

I preferred simple muslin blankets over a pile of complicated swaddles. They’re lightweight and versatile, and you can keep using them as blankets, stroller covers, burp cloths, and more after the swaddle stage is over.

My baby liked having his arms up, so this style worked much better for us than traditional Velcro swaddles. We didn’t swaddle for very long, but this was the one I liked most while we did.

Our Hatch became one of those baby products we used every single night. I especially liked having the sound machine and soft night light together instead of needing multiple things beside the bassinet.

I liked having a monitor that didn’t rely on Wi-Fi or my phone. It’s simple, private, and easy to glance at without opening an app every time you hear a little noise.

Diapering Essentials That Make Life Easier

You change so many diapers in the beginning that a simple, functional setup matters much more than a Pinterest-perfect changing station. These are the things I’d actually want stocked and ready before bringing baby home.

Cassandra Gonzales profile picture
A wipeable changing pad is so much easier than dealing with fabric covers every time there’s a mess. This is one of those registry items you’ll use multiple times every single day.
Skip Hop Baby Changing Pad Wipe-Clean

A nice premium diaper option if you want to put diapers directly on the registry. I still wouldn’t stockpile too heavily in newborn sizes because babies can move through sizes surprisingly fast.
Coterie Baby Wipes + NB & Size 1 Diapers Kit

Wipes disappear incredibly quickly with a newborn, so a bulk pack is actually a useful registry gift. You’ll use them far beyond diaper changes too.
The Honest Company Multi-Use Baby Wipes

This is what I personally reached for when my baby’s skin needed extra moisture or soothing. I like that it isn’t limited to one tiny use — we could use it wherever his skin was getting dry or irritated.

We used the Ubbi and I really liked that it uses regular trash bags instead of making you buy special refill cartridges. The steel body also did a good job of containing diaper smells.
Ubbi Stainless Steel Diaper Pail, No Special Bags

A portable diaper caddy is surprisingly useful, especially if you don’t want to walk back to the nursery for every change. I’d stock it with diapers, wipes, cream, burp cloths, and whatever else you reach for constantly.

Transportation + Getting Out With Baby

These are some of the bigger registry purchases, so this is where I’d think about your actual lifestyle rather than whatever stroller or carrier happens to be trending. You want gear that works for the places you’ll really go.

Cassandra Gonzales profile picture
This is the infant car seat we chose. I liked having an infant seat that could move easily between the car and stroller during those early months when baby fell asleep everywhere.
Nuna ® PIPA ™ rx Graphite Grey Reclining Infant Car Seat + PIPA RELX ™ Base

Cassandra Gonzales profile picture
We paired our Nuna PIPA with the MIXX stroller and got a lot of use out of the travel-system setup. For a stroller, I’d think about where you actually walk, how much trunk space you have, and how often you’ll be folding it.

A soft structured carrier can be really helpful during the newborn stage when you want baby close but still need your hands. I’d prioritize something comfortable and relatively easy to put on by yourself.

Baby Clothing Basics

This is one area where it’s very easy to register for too much. Babies grow ridiculously fast, and people love buying baby clothes anyway, so I’d keep your registry focused on comfortable basics you’ll actually reach for.

Cassandra Gonzales profile picture
Zip-up sleepers were what I reached for most during the newborn stage. Soft fabric + an easy zipper beats complicated little outfits when you’re changing diapers around the clock.
Burt's Bees Baby

Cassandra Gonzales profile picture
Another simple everyday sleeper option. I like stretchy one-piece outfits because they’re comfortable for baby and make dressing and diaper changes much easier.
PurComfy Bamboo Viscose Baby Romper LS

A small pack of soft socks is plenty. You don’t need an entire drawer of them, but having a few pairs around is useful when it’s chilly.
Burt's Bees Baby Organic Ankle & Crew Socks

You really only need a couple newborn hats. These are the kind of simple basics I’d register for rather than buying a dozen cute-but-impractical accessories.

Health + Baby Care Essentials

These are the small things nobody gets excited about putting on a registry — until it’s 2 a.m. and you suddenly need one. I’d rather have the basic care items ready before baby arrives than scramble to buy them later.

Cassandra Gonzales profile picture
A baby thermometer is one of those things I’d buy before you ever need it. I like having a quick option for checking temperature without making an already-fussy baby more uncomfortable.
Frida Baby 3-in-1 Ear and Forehead Infrared Thermometer

This became my preferred way to deal with tiny newborn nails. It felt much less stressful to me than trying to use nail clippers on those impossibly small fingers.

We used the NoseFrida and it’s one of those slightly weird-looking baby products that is incredibly useful once your baby is congested.

I liked having a simple bath support rather than trying to hold a slippery newborn with one arm while washing with the other. It gives baby a supported place to lie during bath time.

15% off with code CASSANDRAML A gentle baby wash is plenty — you really don’t need a whole shelf of newborn bath products. I like keeping baby skincare simple, especially in the beginning.

A soft hooded towel is useful after baths and makes it easier to keep a wet little baby warm while you’re drying and dressing them.

A Few Registry Extras I Think Are Worth Considering

These aren’t as essential as diapers, bottles, or a safe place to sleep, but they’re the kinds of bigger registry gifts that can get used a lot if they fit your space and lifestyle.

Cassandra Gonzales profile picture
A lightweight bouncer gives you a safe spot to set baby down nearby while you eat, shower, fold laundry, or just need both hands for a few minutes. This is more of a splurge registry item than a true necessity.

A play gym can get months of use starting surprisingly early. I like this kind of bigger registry gift because it gives baby a place for tummy time, reaching, looking at contrast cards, and eventually playing more independently.
