Unpopular opinion but… if you’re on a tight budget, DMC is just fine for thread! Regular DMC floss has a great range of colors. You can strand the thread although I use mine as is. If you do not strand it, it definitely looks better on an 18 mesh can...

DMC soft matte cotton is my favorite at the moment for 13 mesh canvas. The only con is that the shade range isn’t nearly as large! It’s only available at Michael’s.

DMC pearl cotton (size 5) is perfect for 18 mesh. If you’re using 13 mesh, I would go with a size 3 instead, although size 3 is widely controversial for likability. Pearl cotton is also what I use for making my cording!
