I prefer my books to be complex and long with excellent character development. Most books don't meet all those requirements, but here are some that I really enjoyed.

America
These books have helped me understand the struggles of Americans through the years.
Not for the faint of heart, but absolutely worth it! I learned a lot and simply could not put this book down!
The Son
To be honest, the writing was not the best, but I was just so absolutely enthralled by this true story, that it was worth it to finish.
The Indigo Girl
This one was so much fun!
The Signature of All Things
I really enjoy when an author can transport you to another place and time. Even if the story is hard, there's something I love about seeing how people have lived and struggled.
Lost Nation
This was actually really helpful for me to help me keep perspective when Covid hit. It's about a mother's struggle in the Dust Bowl during the Depression.
The Four Winds
Talk about a peek into a really different kind of life! This was very eye-opening for me.
The Color Purple
I'm due for a re-read of this book. I do remember being really drawn in and fascinated by their stories and lives.
Lonesome Dove
Based on a true story of a woman captured by indians in early America. Very moving and really gives one perspective.
Flight of the Sparrow: A Novel of Early America
Rest of the World
These give insights into small slices of history in Japan, England, Spain, Russia, Australia, and Iceland.
It was really interesting to be immersed in such a different culture (and time!).
Shogun
Absolutely fascinating moment in history, brilliantly written!
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet
I prefer more robust characters, but the backdrop and scale of this book is absolutely mind-blowing!
The Pillars of the Earth
It is absolutely insane that this is based on reality!!
The Fountains of Silence
Look, you can make the case that their relationship isn't healthy - I would argue, it was in a different time and place. But what you cannot argue is that this story isn't interesting! I love the peek into such a different world. Book two was not my favorite, but I loved book three and her willingness to not shy away from the sometimes ugly part of life.
The Bronze Horseman
Yet another peek at a radically different life! I really enjoyed it!
The Thorn Birds
This immerses you into life in 10th century Iceland. Fascinating!!
