Regular lamps make your house look like a dentist's office. I swapped every light source in my living room for these and my neighbor literally asked if my power went out.

Nothing says haunted manor like a painting whose eyes seem to follow you across the room. Hung these in my stairwell and even I got startled at 2am getting water.

Stretched cotton cobwebs from the drugstore look exactly like stretched cotton. These actually drape like something that's been abandoned for decades.

You can nail the visuals and still have your house smell like last night's pasta. Adding the right scent and ambient sound is what pushed mine from decorated to genuinely atmospheric.

Every proper haunted manor needs a shelf of weird things in jars. Started collecting these and now that shelf stays up year-round because apparently I'm that person now.

Regular curtains completely kill the mood. Swapping mine out for the last two weeks of October was the single biggest visual change in the whole house.

Plastic skulls from the party store look plastic. These have texture and weight and patina and they genuinely fool people into thinking I collect real ones.

Stacking old-looking books around the house made everything feel like it had history. Didn't even need to buy that many — just placed them strategically.

Candles handle most rooms but the entryway and porch needed something extra. Added fog and colored light and suddenly trick-or-treaters were genuinely nervous to approach.

The front door is the first thing people see and the last chance to set expectations. Nailed this part and everything inside hits twice as hard.

Most people stop decorating at the bedroom door but committing to the bit is what separates a decorated house from an actual experience. Fell asleep in my own haunted manor and honestly slept better.
