Checked bags get lost. I only trust things that fit in my personal item now. These are small enough to toss in a laptop bag and forget about until you need them at midnight in a Marriott.

Nothing worse than your sound machine dying at 3am and waking up to a stranger's TV through the wall. Learned that lesson in Dallas. These last the whole night without charging.

My husband sounds like a chainsaw. Love the man, cannot sleep next to him without intervention. These produce enough volume to drown out even the most aggressive snorer without being obnoxious.

Spent a week in Manhattan last fall and the sirens nearly broke me. Street noise, honking, someone always yelling — these pumped out enough sound to make a sixth-floor window feel like a cabin in Vermont.

Crossing time zones wrecks my internal clock. Getting to sleep at the right local time is half the battle. These helped me actually fall asleep at 10pm in London when my body thought it was 5pm.

Traveling with a toddler who won't sleep in a pack-n-play was my personal nightmare. Hotel rooms are too quiet, too loud, too bright — everything's wrong. These kept my daughter asleep long enough for me to actually eat dinner.

Spent way too much on my first sound machine because I assumed expensive meant better. Turns out some of the cheapest ones work just as well. These all cost less than a mediocre hotel breakfast.

Sometimes the machine alone isn't enough. A scratchy hotel pillow or weird room temperature can still ruin everything. These extras round out the setup so nothing gets between you and actual sleep.
