Mythology/Fantasy
These books are based off mythology from our world, geared towards children ages 9-12
We knew this would be on here… because it's so good! Engaging for readers who may not fully enjoy reading… yet
Percy Jackson and the Olympians 5 Book Paperback Boxed Set
Book 1 in the Pandava series, with modern-day (female) reincarnations of the Hindu Pandava brothers
Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi
Engaging, educational on Egyptian mythology, and relatable to kids of that age
Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan
Knew nothing about ancient African gods before I read this as a kid
Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia
Fantasy
Very fantastical :) Even though some of these are series, the first books can be read as standalones.
Two siblings get sucked into their grandmother's old fairy tale book and everything goes from there! A really entertaining take on the Grimm fairy tales
Land of Stories Series by Chris Colfer
Niche, but MY FAVOURITE as a kid, works as a standalone but has a sequel, really engaging, prefect for the younger readers
The Changelings by Christina Soontornvat
SO ICONIC, a long series of short/medium, engaging books that will have your child excited to read (perfect if they like dragons… if they don't, they will after reading this)
The Dragonet Prophecy (Wings of Fire #1) by Tui T. Sutherland
Child prodigy discovers she's an elf! The writing style is so addicting for kids, I can vouch
Keeper of the Lost Cities Series by Shannon Messenger
Better for younger kids, 6-12 years, and there are a LOT of books in this series, but each book is quite short and sweet
Dragon Masters by Tracey West
Completely different than the movies, but so good on its own, funny and cute
How to Train Your Dragon (How to Train Your Dragon Series #1) by Cressida Cowell
This book got my little brother to enjoy reading when he was younger- and the movie actually did it justice!
The Wild Robot (Wild Robot Series #1) by Peter Brown
A classic, a twist on the whole fairytale thing, but super interesting!
The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani
Had to include a classic…
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
Is this sci-fi? Does this count as fantasy? Either way, maybe more for the 12 year old, but very engaging, especially for bright kids
Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez
I SEARCHED FOR THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK FOR YEARS. It had me hooked as a kid, perfect for a chapter with a parent each night
