These items are what you need to begin your first project.
You will need 2 sets (4 pieces) of stretcher bars if you choose to use them. These ensure your canvas isn't warped from stitching.

The cutest little scissors for cutting your thread.
Kelmscott Designs 2.5" Flower Power Scissors
This is a controversial take in the needlepoint world, but I love stitching with DMC embroidery floss. It's easy to work with and the cheapest option you'll find.
DMC 6 Strand Embroidery Floss
These are useful for organizing your threads neatly.
DMC Floss Bobbins with Metal Ring
You'll need size 20 needles for a 13 mesh canvas.
DMCTapestry Hand Needles, 6-Pack, Size 20
You’ll use these tacks to connect your canvas and stretcher bars. This brand is my favorite, and each pack includes a tool to remove them once you’re finished stitching.

The design that you stitch on is called a canvas. It's made up of interlocking woven threads, and typically comes in 2 sizes: 13 or 18 mesh. These numbers indicate how many stitches (or small squares) there are in 1 inch.
This would be a quick first stitch for a beginner.
