Before I got proper weights I was using ziplock bags filled with brine, which leaked and slipped constantly. One time I lost an entire gallon of pickles because the bag burst overnight. These solved that permanently.

Regular mason jar lids need daily burping or pressure builds up. I forgot once and woke up to brine dripping down my counter and onto the floor. Airlock lids fixed that and cut my mold rate to basically zero.

Regular mason jars work fine but they're not designed for weeks of acidic brine sitting inside them. After one cracked on me mid-ferment, I started using vessels actually made for this. The difference in consistency surprised me.

Weights and lids do the heavy lifting but a few small tools eliminated the annoying parts. Packing vegetables by hand hurt my knuckles, measuring salt by eye gave me inconsistent results, and cleaning narrow jars was a nightmare.
