I used to think all coolers were basically the same. Then I left a cheap one in the sun for four hours and came back to a warm soup of ice water and floating grapes. These are the ones that survived a full beach day without flinching.

Nothing ruins a beach day faster than pulling out a warm, sweaty sandwich at noon. I started packing snacks separately in insulated bags and the difference was night and day.

Regular ice melts fast and leaves everything swimming in water. I switched to reusable ice packs two summers ago and haven't bought a bag of ice since. Dry, cold, and no mess.

I once left a regular water bottle on my beach towel and came back to water that was basically tea temperature. Now everything I bring has double-wall insulation and a lid that actually seals.

Sand in my food, sand in my phone, sand in places I won't mention. After one trip where I found sand in my cooler three days later at home, I invested in gear that actually blocks it out.

I watched my friend drop his phone in the surf last summer. That $1000 phone lasted about 30 seconds. A $10 waterproof pouch would have saved it. Lesson learned.

I got a sunburn so bad once that I couldn't sleep on my back for a week. Now I don't leave the house without real sun protection. These are the items that live in my beach bag permanently.
