I Finally Visited Waitomo Glowworm Caves and Here's What to Pack

Purple Star emoji 24 items
Planning a trip to the Waitomo glowworm caves in Waikato? I spent weeks overthinking what to bring, what to book, and what to skip. Turns out most travel blogs left out the stuff that actually mattered once I was standing in a damp cave on a boat sta...

Waitomo Cave Experiences Worth Booking

I almost just booked the basic boat ride and called it a day. Glad I didn't, because some of these side experiences were the parts I still think about months later.

Get the classic boat ride first. Floating in total silence under thousands of tiny blue lights while your eyes adjust is the kind of moment that makes your chest tight in a good way. Book the earliest time slot to dodge the crowds.

Try this smaller operation if you want fewer people around. Our group was maybe eight people total and the guide actually let us sit in the dark for a full minute without talking. Way more intimate than the main cave.

Bring this one into your itinerary if you're someone who hates feeling rushed. The spiral entrance alone took my breath away, and the underground waterfalls hit different when you're not shoulder to shoulder with forty strangers.

Swap your regular cave tour for this if you want to actually get wet. You float through pitch-black caves on an inner tube wearing a wetsuit. I was terrified for about thirty seconds and then couldn't stop laughing.

Sign up for this one if you're the friend who always picks the hardest hike. Rappelling, zip lines, rock climbing, all underground. My arms were sore for three days and I'd do it again tomorrow.

Snag a spot here if the main caves are sold out. It's on private farmland and way less commercial. The farmer who runs it told us stories about finding the cave as a kid. Felt like a secret.

Gear That Saved Me Underground

Nobody warned me how cold and damp those caves get. I showed up in jeans and sneakers like a fool. Don't be me.

Wear this under everything. The caves hover around 13 degrees Celsius year-round and the humidity is brutal. Merino kept me warm without turning into a sweat puddle during the walking sections.

Keep your stuff in something water-resistant and compact. My old cotton backpack would have been soaked through. This one fit snacks, a rain jacket, and my camera without bouncing around on narrow paths.

Use these instead of regular sneakers. The cave floors are slippery limestone and I watched two people in Nikes slide like they were on ice. Grip matters more than you think down there.

Toss this in your bag even if the forecast says sunny. Water drips constantly inside the caves, and Waikato weather flips in twenty minutes. I went from sunshine to sideways rain walking back to the car.

Grab one of these for the black water rafting tours. They provide helmets with lights, but having a backup headlamp clipped to your pack saved me when I dropped my helmet lamp in the river. For real.

Throw your phone and wallet in here before any water-based cave tour. A guy on my raft lost his phone to an underground stream. Watching him try to fish it out in the dark was both sad and slightly funny.

Where to Eat and Stay Near Waitomo

Waitomo village is tiny. Like, blink-and-you-missed-it tiny. But the food and lodging options punched way above their weight, especially these spots.

Grab dinner here your first night. The lamb shank fell apart with a fork and the wine list is surprisingly solid for a cafe next to a cave. Sit outside if the weather cooperates.

Stay here if you want to be walking distance from the main cave entrance. Nothing fancy, but the beds were comfortable and the owner left fresh fruit and coffee out every morning.

Book one of the themed rooms if you're traveling with kids or just want a weird story. I slept in a converted patrol boat. My friend slept in a hobbit hole. We still argue about who had the better room.

Swing by for coffee and a pie before your morning tour. The mince and cheese pie was the kind of food that makes you close your eyes while chewing. Don't overthink it, just order one.

Try the local venison if it's on the menu. The dining room feels a little old-school in a charming way, like your grandparents' nice restaurant. Portions are huge.

Pick this if you're on a budget and don't mind shared spaces. The communal kitchen was clean, the people were friendly, and I met a couple from Berlin who joined us for the next day's rafting.

Side Trips Within an Hour of Waitomo

Waikato has more going on than caves. I almost skipped these because I thought Waitomo was a one-day stop. Ended up staying three extra days.

Drive fifteen minutes from Waitomo and walk through a collapsed cave with ferns growing out of the ceiling. The whole loop takes thirty minutes and barely anyone was there. Perfect if your legs are tired from caving.

Bring a towel and stand at the base. The mist hits you from twenty meters away. It's a short walk from the parking lot and the waterfall is taller than I expected from the photos.

Use this trail to see ancient oyster fossils embedded in limestone walls. Sounds nerdy, but running your fingers over something thirty million years old while standing in a quiet forest hits differently.

Stop here on your way to or from Waitomo. It's one of the few places you can actually see a kiwi bird up close. The nocturnal exhibit is dark and quiet, and suddenly there's this fuzzy little dinosaur waddling past your feet.

Take the long way back and follow this road through farmland and limestone country. Roll your windows down. The air smells like wet grass and eucalyptus and the views are the kind you pull over for.

Tack this onto your last day. The staircase down to the base is steep but worth every step. Standing at the bottom looking up at a 55-meter waterfall crashing into a pool made the whole trip feel complete.
