On Screen!
This only came out a year or so ago so theres still time to give it its flowers! A genuinely funny and odd coming of age that spans a whole family.
Everyone Else Burns
Okay, not nearly as underground but this is so genuinely hilarious. One of the greatest UK sitcoms.
Chewing Gum
Stumbled upon this by accident but it made for such cosy watching. Quietly funny and warm, queer coming of age in your late 20s/early 30s.
Am I OK?
A series about a crime scene cleaner shouldn't be this funny…
The Cleaner
"Claire… it's French!" an end of the world (ish), mother daughter crime thriller - sensational.
Two Weeks To Live
I never saw the original, but this remake took my breath away. I was genuinely terrified and some of the shots were utter genius.
The Invisible Man
This to me is perfect for fans of Past Lives. The warmth of the picture and the tenderness of the story. I often think about the end credits note.
The Farewell
Periodically I watch this movie and am filled with so much energy and hope.
War Room
This has fast become a Halloween go to for me now. Black, Horror, Satire.
The Blackening
In Literature!
Pulled in by the cover, this has long stayed with me since. A thoughtful, dreamlike coming of age set in China.
Twenty Fragments of a Ravenous Youth
One of my last 5 star reads. This is a hilarious, yet devastating, portrait of grief, love and healing.
Pity Party
Another case of drawn in by a cover. I am so passionate about diverse representation in the ‘Woman vs the void’ genre and this is a wonderful example of that with a South Asian (Indian) immigrant daughter narrative.
Ghost Chilli
I wont stop talking about this. One of the best short story collections I've ever read. Dystopian, social commentary horror - yes!
Friday Black
The underrated Paulo Coehlo. I much preferred this to The Alchemist!
Veronika Decides to Die
Another grief book! Another book thats stayed with me. Such a bold, unfiltered and beautiful take on a less discussed experience.
Someday, Maybe
A gorgeous poetry collection for the thought daughters.
Wearing My Mother's Heart
An acquired taste - but again if youre a fan of “Woman vs Void”, and diversifying the experiences, this is one for your list. Palestinian American, complex mother daughter relationships and sexuality.
