Before You Go…
A blog post I wrote earlier this year on how to travel round Patagonia without needing to rely on an expensive tour (with exception of day trips). It’s perfectly straightforwards to do, honest!
How to see the best of Patagonia as an independent traveller - my blog
100% read this before you go…a remarkably evocative book that brings the landscape and the hardy folk that inhabit it to life
In Patagonia by Bruce Chatwin, Paperback
Mandatory entry form for all tourists entering Chile - if you’ve bought an online bus ticket from Argentina they’ll ask to see it before issuing your paper ticket
COMPLETE THIS FORM before arriving in Chile .
By far the easiest - and cheapest - way to get between Argentine and Chilean Patagonia is a pretty comfortable 5hr bus journey. We used Busbud to book online.
If you’re traveling to Chile make sure you’ve completed your entry form (link in this lis...
Puerto Natales → El Calafate (and vice versa) bus tickets
What To Do
Torres Del Paine is a pain (ho ho!) to get to, as it’s around 2hrs from the nearest town, Puerto Natales. We did this day tour to secure transport to/from the National park as well as a loosely guided hike up to the base towers.
One of the most b...
Easiest Way to Hike Torres del Paine National Park (day tour from Puerto Natales)
Apparently you can only buy this online now (14,000 CLP for adults aged 18-59, 5,000 CLP above and below - up to three days’ entry) so may as well get organised.
Buy your entry ticket to Torres Del Paine National Park in advance
When else will you get to hike (relatively easy) on a glacier? This was one of my highlights of all Patagonia, up to and including the glass of whiskey with 5,000 year old glacier ice.
Return coach transport from El Calafate…and lunch…is included...
Go hiking on a glacier! Minitrekking in the Perito Moreno Glacier
Laguna de los tres and laguna torre are the money hikes (take a look at my blog post and you’ll see the views you’ll get!) but this guide gave the clearest explanations of the full range of hikes available from this awesome town!
Best list of hikes (and instructions + maps!) for El Chalten
Just a little preview of all you can expect!

If you’ve got more time, this is one of Patagonia’s classic multi-day hikes. This guide gives you all you need to prepare.
Comprehensive Guide to the Classic W Circuit Hike (5 days)
Eat, Drink, Sleep, Repeat
After trekking on a glacier or in El Chalten, you’ll be glad of a comfy bed - we loved Picos del Sur for its comfort and the awesome breakfast.
Comfy, good value hotel with great breakfast in El Calafate
We loved this little apart-hotel on outskirts of El Chalten - walking distance to town and, for those early morning hikes, less than 2 minute walk to the principal hiking trailhead. Better still, breakfast is included
Fantastic hotel El Chalten (100m from hiking trailhead!)
Let’s face it, you’ll work up a hell of an appetite here and you’ve earnt that stake and glass (bottle) of Malbec…this was our favourite place in all Argentina for steak!
LA POSTA - The best steakhouse in El Calafate!
We ventured here every night in El Chalten - great beer selection (especially considering you are in the middle of nowhere!), a good cocktail range and hearty portions of high quality pub food
LA CERVECERÍA CHALTÉN - Patagonia’s best microbrewery (decent cocktails too!)
This was my favourite place to get a pisco or calafate sour in Puerto Natales. Drink the latter and it guarantees you’ll return to Patagonia (so have a few to make sure!)
