Best Makeup Brands for Deep Skin Tones

Lipstick emoji 14 items
The makeup brands that get deep skin tones right, with formulas that are hard to mess up — what I use from each and why it works. I'm a Black genderqueer makeup artist with deep neutral, combination skin. Every brand here earns its place two ways: th...

SHADE RANGE THAT GOES DEEP ENOUGH

The screening question. These four don't stop one shade short of where I need them.

Victor Scotti · Unblended profile picture
The range I reach for most, and the easiest entry point on this list. Their complexion sticks and fluids come in shades that are genuinely deep and genuinely neutral, and the formulas are sheer enough that getting the shade slightly wrong doesn't cos...

The reliable one. NC50 has existed long enough that I can buy it anywhere without swatching, and their lip pencils in Chestnut and Cork give me a warm and a neutral option that both read properly on deep skin.
MAC Cosmetics

Their Deep shade (and DeepER shade book) is a real deep, not a medium-dark relabelled. I use both the matte and the pressed powder, and having the same shade in two finishes is what lets me hold one matte zone without dulling the skin around it.
Made By Mitchell (Curve Cases)

On this list for the corrector sticks specifically. Very Deep Peach and Espresso are two different undertones at the same depth, and owning both is how I brighten under my eyes without landing on grey — the mistake almost every single-corrector routi...

FOOLPROOF FORMULAS

Brands where the product does the work for you. Start here if you're new.

The most beginner-proof formulas I own. The Universal Blurring Balm works in tiny amounts and won't go patchy, and Color Fix doubles as a lip base that keeps color from migrating. Almost everything is multi-use, which means fewer decisions.

Two primers doing two opposite jobs, which is the whole reason my dewy-matte zoning works. Smooth & Blur where I want texture softened, Hydrating Primerizer everywhere else. Hard to over-apply either one.
Smashbox

SKINCARE AND PREP

The dewy half of my method is built here, before any makeup goes on.

Sunscreen with no white cast on deep skin, which is rarer than it should be. Their Sheer Facial Sunscreen SPF 40 is the last layer before primer and it doubles as grip — if one brand on this list solves a problem specific to us, it's this one.

Where I'd send anyone starting out. Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 applied on damp skin is where the luminosity in every look I post actually comes from — not from a highlighter — and it costs almost nothing to try.
The Ordinary

Lait-Crème Concentré is the moisturizer I trust on combination skin. Rich enough for dry patches without turning my base greasy by hour six, which is the balance most rich creams get wrong.
Embryolisse

My daily cleanser lives here. Gentle enough that it doesn't strip the oil I actually want on my face later — over-cleansing is the fastest way to lose the dewy finish before you've even started.
Derma E

The softer cleanse for days when a gel is too much. Leaves my skin comfortable rather than tight, which matters more on combination skin than any single active does.

SETTING AND FINISHING

Where deep skin gets failed most often, and where the right pick is invisible.

The Bake & Set quad in Rich Harmony gives me four depths in one compact, so I can set different areas without one flat cast over the whole face. Multi-shade setting powder is the fix for the ashy look cheap translucent powder leaves.

The best value on this list and the most on-brand thing I own: they make both a matte and a dewy setting spray, which is dewy-matte zoning available in a finish step for a few dollars. Matte where the color is, dewy everywhere else.

Easy Bake is what I use when a zone has to stay put through a full day. Loose powder, applied only where I've decided matte belongs — used all over it would fight everything else in my routine.
