Part 1: Wake Up Your Core (Gentle but Effective)
These are my go-to movements when I want to reconnect with my core without jumping into something intense. They’re perfect for early mornings, postpartum recovery, or days when your body just needs a little kindness and control.
Lie on your back, legs up on a chair or couch. Inhale into your ribs, exhale slowly while gently pulling belly button down. A great reset for posture and pelvic stability.
90/90 Breathing Position
This is the queen of coordination. Lying on your back, slowly extend one leg at a time while keeping your core braced. Add arm movement to progress.
Dead Bug
Keep ribs down and glutes engaged as you lift your hips. This builds deep core-pelvic coordination and it’s sneaky hard when done right.
Glute Bridge with Rib Control
Gentle shifts of the pelvis forward/backward or tracing “clock” directions improves body awareness and control without pressure or strain.
Pelvic Tilts or Clockwork (on back)
On hands and knees, gently pull the belly in without rounding the back. This lights up the deep core and is great postpartum or during flare-ups.
Diaphragmatic Breathing in Quadruped
Part 2: Build Strength & Control
This is where the core starts doing more than just “activating”; these moves help build real-world strength and endurance without endless crunches. I use these for clients who need to get strong and stay functional.
No need to start on the floor; planking on an incline still activates everything. Keep shoulders over wrists, ribs tucked, and glutes engaged.
Elevated Plank Holds (on a counter or bench)
Just a few seconds of this lights up your entire core and stabilizers. Perfect low-impact strength move.
Bear Crawl Holds
Opposite arm and leg extend from hands and knees. Control is the goal, not speed. Add a pause for more challenge.
Bird Dog (slow & steady)
Side plank too much? Try this instead. Focus on lifting the top leg while bracing your core and keeping your hips stacked.
Side-Lying Leg Lifts with Core Engagement
Slide down into a mini squat against the wall and focus on diaphragmatic breathing while bracing your core. Great for building endurance and control at once.
Wall Sit with Breath Work
Part 3: Functional & Feel-Good Finishers
These movements link your core with the rest of your body because that’s how we move in real life. They’re grounding, energizing, and honestly some of the most effective core resets I’ve found for busy days.
Helps link core to hips and shoulders. Plus it mimics real-life rotation patterns. Keep hips stable while moving your upper body.
Half-Kneeling Chop with Resistance Band or Towel
One of the most underrated core resets. Carry something with good posture and controlled steps; it wakes everything up.
Carry Something Heavy (Farmer’s Carry)
Press hands into a wall while lifting one knee at a time. Simple, effective, and a quiet burn for the deep core.
Wall Press Marches
Great desk or stroller reset. Helps retrain pelvic awareness, especially for postpartum or chronic back tension.
Seated or Standing Pelvic Clock Drills
Great for hip mobility and core engagement at once. It’s a stretch, a strengthener, and a coordination drill all in one.
