This was the first thing I tackled after her fall. She was gripping the towel rack to stand up, which is terrifying because those things rip right out of drywall. Now she pops up on her own without even thinking about it.

The shower was my biggest worry because wet tile plus bare feet plus an 80-year-old is a math problem nobody wants to solve. I put in three bars total and she went from dreading showers to taking them without calling me first.

After the grab bars went in, my mom still got tired standing for a full shower. I watched her rush through washing her hair because her legs ached. A shower seat changed everything and now she actually enjoys her showers again.

I found out my mom was stepping out of the shower onto a regular cotton bath mat that slid across the tile like a sled. Nearly had a heart attack when she told me. Replaced every mat and surface in that bathroom within 48 hours.

Nobody talks about this part, but getting on and off a standard toilet was the thing my mom struggled with most. Regular toilets are only 15 inches high and that's a long way down when your knees don't cooperate anymore.

Half of my mom's close calls happened between midnight and 5 AM. She wouldn't turn on the overhead light because it blinded her and she'd stumble around in the dark. These solved the 3 AM danger zone without waking her up fully.
