The first time I played this with cheap paper, it disintegrated before the third kid even got a turn. You need paper that tears cleanly on purpose but doesn't fall apart from sweaty little hands passing it around.

Every layer needs a little prize or the kids who don't win the center gift will riot. I spent way too long on this the first time. These are cheap enough to buy in bulk but fun enough that nobody feels cheated.

Someone has to control the music, and the first time I used my phone it kept auto-locking mid-song. Get a proper little speaker situation so the designated DJ parent isn't fumbling around.

You need kids sitting in a circle that doesn't collapse into chaos every 30 seconds. The first party I hosted, kids were sprawled everywhere and the parcel went rogue. These keep everyone in position.

The whole point of pass the parcel is that final center gift. Go too small and the winner is disappointed. Go too big and it won't wrap properly. These are the Goldilocks zone.

Pass the parcel burns through kid energy fast, especially when they're screaming every time the music stops. Have refuel stations ready or you'll lose half the group to hangry meltdowns by round two.

Nobody warns you about the wrapping paper explosion. After 12 kids tear through 15 layers each round, your living room looks like a recycling center had a meltdown. Be ready or you'll be picking up shreds for days.
