Jordan Travel Essentials: What I Took & What Actually Worked

Purple Star emoji 12 items
I travelled around Jordan in February and quickly discovered that packing for "Jordan" isn't quite as simple as it sounds. Petra, the Dead Sea and Aqaba were surprisingly warm, while Amman was genuinely cold and Wadi Rum went from warm days to very c... plus a couple of things I wish I'd packed after learning the hard way. By the way, I always pack light and feel more warm and cold so luckily had enough lightweight cotton clothes with me.

👟Walking & Everyday Shoes

You will walk a lot in Jordan, especially at Petra. Comfortable footwear matters more than looking stylish.

Best for: Petra, Jerash, Mount Nebo. I took comfortable walking shoes and was very glad I did. Petra especially involves considerably more walking than you might expect, often over uneven ground. Wear something you've already broken in.

Best for: Aqaba, Dead Sea. Useful around the hotel and warmer destinations, but I wouldn't bother buying a special pair just for Jordan. If you already own comfortable sandals, take them.

This is the one thing I wish I'd taken. The Dead Sea shoreline is incredibly sharp and stony. The stones literally bite into your feet. I hadn't packed reef shoes and ended up wearing my room slippers into the water just to protect my feet. Don't mak...

☀️Lightweight Clothes

This was one of my biggest surprises: February does not mean winter everywhere in Jordan.

Best for: Petra, Dead Sea, Aqaba. I packed T-shirts and wore them frequently. For Petra, the Dead Sea and Aqaba, lightweight clothing was much more appropriate than I had expected.

Best for: Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea. I found sun protection important, particularly at Petra where you're exposed to the sun for hours.

Best for: Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea, Aqaba. Don't let February fool you. The warmer destinations can be very sunny during the day.

🩱 Swimming & Water

I wouldn't think of Jordan as a "water holiday", but both the Dead Sea and Red Sea need their own preparation.

Best for: Aqaba / Red Sea. Definitely take one. The Red Sea is amazing, and if you're staying in Aqaba you don't want to miss the chance to get in.

Best for: Dead Sea, Aqaba / Red Sea. A small but genuinely useful purchase if you're going into the water or taking your phone around the beach. It keeps your phone protected while still allowing you to use it.

🧥 Layers: The Part I Got Wrong

I initially thought I needed to pack for February. What I actually needed was to pack for different Jordanian climates.

Best for: Amman, Wadi Rum at night. I took thermals and they were genuinely useful. Amman was cold, while Wadi Rum became very cold after sunset. This is one of the few clothing items I'd actively recommend buying specifically for the trip if you don...

Best for: Amman, Wadi Rum at night. I actually left for Petra wearing a sweater over a T-shirt and had to take it off within about 10 minutes because I was too warm. I was glad I had a proper jacket in Amman. This was one place where February genuine...

Best for: Amman evenings, Wadi Rum. I would take one again, but keep it easily accessible rather than buried in your suitcase. It's useful as an extra layer when temperatures drop.
