A list of things a new budgie owner will need to give their bird a happy life! (ONLY for budgies and not any other birds). If you get your budgie from a pet store (Pet Co, PetSmart, etc.) or from a bird breeder, make sure to give them the same food they've been eating before introducing new foods or healthier options. Budgies are very sensitive and you will need to give up things you love. For example, I had to give up perfumes, candles, regular cleaners, bleach and nonstick pans. If you aren't willing to give these up, please do not get a budgie. Sometimes budgies will see shadows or have night frights, they can fly around in panic and hurt themselves. To prevent this cover the cage with a thin blanket or towel and leave a small light so they will be able to see if they do panic. For the first 1-3 days, leave them alone, they need time to get used to the new environment. Treat them with care and don't chase or grab them. I recommend getting two budgies even though it might be a little bit harder to train them. If you do not have time to constantly spend with them, get another budgie. Doing research, a week or two prior to getting a budgie is a great choice. If you need tips or help, I recommend watching the Budgie Academy! Tail bobbing, whole body moving as the bird breathes, vomiting or weakness, please take it to the vet or an Avian specialist.
