Here's the routine I'd recommend as a certified trichologist! If you have an oily scalp, you're probably washing your hair about 3x per week. Your core routine at a minimum would include a clarifying shampoo (1x week) and a regular shampoo (all other...

Clarifying Shampoo

Use 1x per week min. If you have a particularly sweaty or grimy day, that's when I'd try and use a clarifying shampoo as they typically have stronger cleansing agents to help clean the scalp.

Kristin Ess Clarifying Shampoo is a classic at this point! I absolutely think this is a great option regardless of budget.

I really love a clarifying shampoo with charcoal. I think it really helps detox and purify hair. This Luseta one is really nice.
Charcoal Detox Shampoo

Raw Sugar is underrated in my opinion. This one has charcoal to help detox but aloe that will also add back in hydration. This one would be one of the gentler options.
The Deep Cleanse Shampoo | Charcoal + Matcha + Aloe

This formula is meant to be both purifying and balancing - a good detox for the scalp without stripping.
MAXI.WASH Shampoo

Regular Shampoo

Use for all other washes in the week. This shampoo should be a bit more gentle than a clarifying shampoo but still provide a good cleansing. For oily scalps, I look for lightweight but not harsh shampoos.

Odele is always a good choice for a budget option. When I see ‘weightless,' I know it will be good to cleanse and not weigh down oily roots.
Volumizing Shampoo

Acure is another great budget brand. Mint will also make your scalp feel a little fresher!

Another Raw Sugar pick! This one for ‘lifeless hair’ helps an oily scalp and weightless ensures you don't end up with residue after cleansing.
The Volume Revive Shampoo | Strawberry + White Tea + Nettle

Clarifies but is gentle enough for regular use. Plus has ingredients meant to awaken and stimulate.
STIMULATE-ME WASH

This line was developed with a trichologist, which I love – that means scalp health was at the forefront when it was created.
Serene Scalp Oil Control Shampoo

Gentle yet effective nature-powered shampoo. Rahua also donates $$$ to saving the Amazon rainforest!
Aloe Vera Shampoo

Conditioner

Conditioner should be applied after every wash, unless you are swapping in a mask/gloss. Apply from you mids to ends only, NOT to your scalp. Rinse thoroughly.

Kelsey Taylor profile picture
I would recommend this conditioner for dry/damaged ends as it is a bit on the richer side.
Shiseido Tsubaki Premium Volume & Repair Conditioner

Kelsey Taylor profile picture
Good all around conditioner that could work for many hair types. Detangles, softens, smoothens, and adds shine. Some of my favorite ingredients - argan oil and aloe. Plus, cruelty-free!
Tangle Free Conditioner

Love a Costco product! This has been compared to both Pureology and more recently Alterna products. A steal in that case! Make sure you have a good clarifying step in your routine with this one as otherwise this could end up weighing hair down.
Kirkland Signature Moisture Conditioner

If your strands are a bit on the dry side, you should check out this KM conditioner with antioxidants.
HYDRATE-ME.RINSE

Aloe Vera Conditioner

Hair Mask/Gloss

Often times we may feel like we've cut the oil down, but now our ends are on the dry side. You can add in a mask or gloss to help fix that.

ONLY for if you are also looking for a toning step. In that case, this is a great 2-in-1 - toning and rich, deep conditioning.

Gold Lust Transformative Masque

Leave-in

Multi-tasking leave-ins that accomplish a lot - detangling, moisturizing, adding shine, and heat protection. These are great for people who want to keep a more minimal routine or just get good bang for you buck in a single product. (If yours doesn't ...

This Odele leave-in is a lighter, hydrating option that I love. Amodimethicone is the second ingredient after water, which is amazing. It binds selectively with damaged parts of hair while not weighing it down.
Leave-in Detangling Tonic

Use this Luseta leave-in if you prefer to have a bit of thickening as well. Also has argan oil and keratin, plus it's cruelty-free.
10-in-1 Multipurpose Leave-In Conditioner

BioSilk totally flies under the radar in my opinion. Very different ingredients from other options, so if you have not found a leave-in you love yet, check this one out!
BioSilk Silk Therapy Miracle 17

I've tested out a LOT of the It's a 10 Leave-ins. They're such good multitaskers. And I think this one is my favorite!
Blow Dry Miracle Glossing Leave-in - It's A 10

This has a combination of some more unique natural ingredients but also has one of my favorite leave-in ingredients, cyclopentasiloxane. It helps protect and smooth, but it's very lightweight.

This leave-in is made for both blow dries and air dries, which is uncommon!

Odele offers this nice non-aerosol, powder dry shampoo with starch, kaolin and silica. If you're looking for a botanical option, check this one out.

My favorite non-aerosol dry shampoo that I buy again and again! Bonus points that it's a small woman-owned business, eco-conscious, and cruelty free. (10% off with 10KELSEY)

If you have dark hair and dry shampoo tends to be obviously white, check this one out - it's specifically for dark hair and works really well. No white cast here I've found!

In my opinion, this is the best texturizing spray on the market. I've never found something else quite like it!
Dry Texturizing Spray

Detox

If shampoo just doesn't feel like it's cutting it, you may want to add in a pre-shampoo scalp detox treatment.

This Pacifica tonic has some great detox ingredients (apple cider) and also chemical exfoliation (glycolic acid, salicylic acid). Your scalp will feel super clean!
Rosemary Apple Cider Scalp Detox Tonic - Pacifica

Kelsey Taylor profile picture
This Sally Beauty option is kind of like a toner for your scalp with apple cider vinegar, witch hazel and tea tree oil. Don't use this one if your scalp tends to get irritated as some of these ingredients can be just a little harsher in that case.

This AROMATICA option has a nice cooling effect. Not only for oily scalp, you can also try this one for general scalp discomfort as it is also soothing.
AROMATICA Tea Tree Purifying Tonic

Heat Protection

If your leave-in product doesn't offer heat protection, make sure you add one!

Kelsey Taylor profile picture
I feel like ION at Sally is slept on. This offers strong heat protection but is still lightweight and won't make hair greasy.
