If you are a twenty-something moving out of your parent's house or a first-time homeowner, these are the tools I think you should have in your new place. A toolbox with these items included would make an awesome gift for anyone out on their own! Way better than flowers or a a cheese and sausage basket. Seriously. They can use this set for hanging pictures in the beginning. But as time passes, there will be many opportunities to use these basic tools!
Hammer, Nails & Measuring Tape
Especially for unpacking boxes… Your car keys sometimes don't work very well! haha.
A Good Utility Knife
A toolbox is a must-have (I think), so your tools don't end up stashed all over the garage or basement… or junk drawer! This particular one is a little larger… 24." Leaving room for extra tools in the future.
Tool Box
Please make sure your loved one has a plunger when they move out. Please!
Plunger
Pliers come in handy for a variety of tasks. This set has Needlenose pliers, Slip Joint pliers, Groove Joint pliers. I use needlenose pliers for so many things. Fixing toys, getting things out of small spaces… you name it, I've used needlenose pliers to do something to it. haha The slip joint pliers can be used to ‘turn things’ of various sizes. They are usually used in plumbing situations, but when you understand how a tool works, you can use it for just about anything!
Pliers Set
I don't know how popular this particular opinion is… but I think a hacksaw is so useful to have around. I am a renovator, and I use my various hacksaws for all kinds of tasks. The thin saw can get into spaces that a normal saw can't. They are invaluable!
Adjustable Hacksaw
A pricier item, This drill should be good enough to last for many years to come. It's meant for lighter use, but that covers 99% of most household maintenance and repair jobs. It comes with 2 batteries, so they can use this without cords getting in the way.
Cordless Drill
Every home needs a really good, sturdy step ladder! Not a cheap plastic thing that will break the moment you gain 5 pounds. haha This particular ladder is rated for 500 lbs, so we are assured it will hold up your loved one and the giant piece of art they are trying to hang. A good step ladder comes in hand so very often!
Step Ladder
A really good ladder is a great addition to any new home. This particular ladder is suited for up to 300lbs on each side! Yes two people can climb this ladder at the same time. So awesome :) The legs flare out for extra stability and they can use it as an A-frame or an extension ladder. You know, so they can clean the gutters out in the spring themselves! No excuses! This ladder is fairly expensive, so maybe they can save up for this. But there is nothing worse than a crappy extension ladder flopping around and bending under 100 lbs and twisting in the wind. This can actually kill you.
Tall Ladder
These are good for painting, cleaning, cutting and so much more! The various sizes help, but I find scraping up gunk to be their #1 use.
Scrapers/Putty Knives
Socket set. I use mine all the time at work, but around the house I use it once in a while. Assembling the trampoline every spring and building furniture. I think this a good idea.
Socket Set
If they don't know how to fix something, glue it! I'm only half joking here… I use super glue all the time, but I have kids so I'm always repairing cheap plastic toys. As a rule, please don't use super glue for plumbing and woodworking repairs, but it comes in handy for so many other things!
Super Glue
They will use this ALL THE TIME! Obviously a screwdriver with all the most common bits will come in really hand over the years.
Ratcheting Screwdriver Multibit Set
So gross, but so useful! These little plastic spiky strips work so well to clean hair clogs out of drains. They are so cheap that you can technically throw them out after a use. It may save hundreds of dollars to call a plumber! I always have a few of these under my sink.
Drain Clog Remover Tool
Please get this for their bathroom sink. All the hair gets caught on it before it goes down to start a clog. I have this (and the tub drain one too) and I'm very thankful that someone recommended it to me. I clean it every couple days, and it's really gross. And awesome.
Bathroom Sink Hair Catcher
Stick this in the bathtub drain, and it will catch all the hair before it creates a problem! It needs to be cleaned out every few days, but it's awesome!
Bathtub Drain Protector
If you don't want to go to the trouble of collecting all the things, then a tool set might be the way to go. Especially if you don't plan on using the tools much at all, the overall quality of the tools may not be important. This would be a great option. Personally, tools are very important to me as I use my tools daily for work. So I buy the top quality I can afford, and they end up lasting forever. You can't beat the price of this set (under $60) so it might be perfect! I would recommend this for light use.
