The single biggest mistake I made was leaving that harsh ceiling light on every evening. Once I scattered warm, low light around the room, the whole vibe shifted overnight — literally.

My room used to feel like a hospital — thin white sheets, no texture, nothing you'd actually want to sink into. Layering heavier fabrics was what finally made it feel grounded.

Floating shelves and acrylic organizers were killing the mood. I needed something that looked like it could survive a century, not something that looked like it came in a flat pack — even if it did.

I ripped down the tapestry and the fairy light collage. What replaced them actually made my walls look like they belonged in a building with history.

Half the library mood is the smell. I wanted my room to hit you with that warm, woody, slightly musty feeling the second you walked in — not Bath and Body Works vanilla.

White sheer curtains were letting in harsh afternoon sun and making my carefully-lit room look washed out. Heavier, darker curtains changed the entire atmosphere in ten minutes.

Cold bare floor was ruining everything. A dark, patterned rug pulled the entire room together and made it feel like a space with history instead of a rental apartment.

The big pieces set the tone but these small touches are what made visitors actually say ‘wow, this feels like a library’ instead of just ‘nice room.’

Empty shelves or shelves full of random paperbacks weren't cutting it. Stacking and arranging books intentionally made the biggest visual difference of anything on this list.

Bright tropical plants clashed hard with the dark palette. Finding greenery that actually liked dim corners and looked like it belonged in an old conservatory took some trial and error.
