Bug themed books and activities for homeschoolers

Spring is in the air, and what better way to welcome the season than with a morning basket all about bugs and insects? This month's theme will spark curiosity, encourage outdoor exploration, and provide plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning. I try to keep a few basics in my morning basket like read alouds, picture books, poetry, hands on activities, and memory work. Below is the list of resource books I would like to have on hand for browsing and identifying bugs and insects. I like to use our morning basket theme to build our resource library. I typically get 2-3 and if my child seems interested in the topic once we get started I will add some more to our collection.

I love it when my kids are ready for the beginner chapter book phase. These books are for kids who are Ready for a Challenge. The chapters are short and are especially good to use as a shared reader. Usually, beginner chapter books are a part of a series so kids fall in love with one and just keep reading!

Transitional readers help children build reading Confidence. These books have slightly longer sentences and more varied vocabulary. They still include plenty of pictures and are easy stories to follow and fall in love with.

For ages 5-7 it can be difficult to pick a good shared reader because there is such a range on what a child in this age can read comfortably. It's not just about what they can decode but also what they comprehend from the reading. February is a great time to incorporate the importance of Black History into your homeschool. During February I invite you to stuff your morning baskets to inspire learning, foster discussions about justice and equality, and celebrate influential black figures through inspiring stories, art, and activities. In 1926 the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History created “Negro History Week” during the second week of February as a way to recognize African Americans and their accomplishments. In 1976 President Gerald Ford extended “Negro History Week” to include the full month of February because he recognized that the achievements of black Americans were not being honored throughout history. I encourage you to dive into the stories of these remarkable men and women, they will build empathy and understanding. You will be surprised at how introducing Black History will instill a sense of justice in your children for many years. Below I will share some books and resources about Black leaders, artists, scientists, and activists throughout history.
