Hold types 🫳🏼
These are the different grips we use in rock climbing!
A small edge where the fingers are bent tightly over the hold, this requires good finger strength!
Crimp
A large, easy-to-grip hold, a favourite for most and the best for beginners
Jug
A hold that is smooth and rounded, difficult to grip... (I hate slopers 😭)
Slopers
A hold gripped by pinching between the fingers and thumb, some people love this grip, I am not one of them.
Pinch
A small, round hole that fits one or two fingers... Or more if you have tiny hands!

Climbing moves 🕺
Different ‘moves’ that help us scale different angles on rock.
A move where one knee is dropped inwards to increase body tension and reach
Dropknee
A dynamic move where the climber jumps to reach the next hold, essentially just another word for 'jump'
Dyno
A technique where the climber pushes down on a hold to stand up on it, easier if you're flexy!
Mantle
Using the heel to hook onto a hold for leverage, it takes some practice
Heel hook
Using the top of the foot or toes to hook onto a hold- just like a heel hook but with your toes
Toe hook
A move where the knee is jammed between two holds to create a resting position- much more common in sport climbing
Kneeler
Climbing terms
General terms that get thrown around! I'm kind of giving you ‘beta’ right now 😜
Information or advice on how to climb a route, this could be what holds are better or what moves people used!
Beta
When your forearms get tired and you start to lose your grip
Pump
A big fall where the rope catches you after gaining some momentum, I love whippers...
Whipper
A less-than-vertical wall that requires balance and footwork rather than strength
