A clothes rack is a great place to put your hanging clothes while you are organising your wardrobe. Place one segment of your wardrobe on it at a time.  Choose a collapsible one like this that doesn't take up much space for the rest of the year.

A hand held vacuum cleaner can get into places in the wardrobe and drawers where other products fail to reach.  This one is the top rated hand held vacuum cleaner by USA Today and Amazon.

While everything is out of your closet, it's a great time clean everything.  While sugar soap is normally recommended for walls, if you don't want to buy a special product use a gentle dishwashing liquid diluted in hot water.  Wipe with a damp cloth and a dry cloth to avoid leaving any residue on the walls.

Best for spot cleaning walls.  I was blown away when a professional cleaner introduced me to these.  They are so effective!

Microfibre cleaning clothes have an extra bit of grip to help remove grime from walls. Dry the fibres can help pick up dust. These are similar to what I use.

As you sort through your clothes you will need somewhere to store then and something to transport any clothes you no longer need.  Boxes are perfect as they can be stacked and are easy to move. If you use second hand boxes, make sure they are clean.

Shape Savers

Top products for keeping everything from your boots to your hats and everything in between in the right shape.

Best for long boots.  This may seem like an odd one, but pool noddles are great for keeping the shape in long boots and preventing creases in the leather. Cut them to just longer than your boots to make them easy to remove and put the cut off noodles inside your boots whe...

Best for Tops and Dresses.  I use velvet coat hangers like these for all my tops and most dresses.  They take up less space and the velvet helps to keep tops made from silk, polyester and any other slippery fabric in place.  Look for ones with the little notches on the top like these.  The notches are for holding spaghetti straps in place.

Best for Pants and Light Weight Jackets.  Pants and Jackets need a stronger hanger and a thicker hanger helps prevent creases in pants and to keep the fitted shoulders in jackets sitting correctly.  I like black plastic to colour coordinate with my belt velvet hangers.

Best for trousers and jackets. My husband loves the look and feel of wooden hangers. They are also very durable. If you always wear your suit jacket and trousers together, you can put them on the one hanger.  Otherwise separate them.

Best for thick coats and jackets.  Coats and jackets made from stiffer fabrics require a coat hanger that is wide enough to keep the shape of the coat around the shoulders.  This is particularly important if you like to overfill your wardrobe :)

Many hats will be damaged if they are squashed.  Beanies are fine!  They are best stored in a hat box or any other firm container that doesn't press on the hat.  To save space, stack similarly sized hats inside each other.

Space Savers

Whether you are running short of space of just want to get out-of-season clothes out of sight, check out these storage solutions.

Best for out-of-season hanging clothes. Suit bags are not just for travel.  They are great for hiding out-of-season garments, or those that don't currently fit, from sight so that you don't reach for them by mistake.  A few larger garment bags, like this one, will look much neater than a zillion smaller ones.

Best use of spare space.  If you have a spare space in your wardrobe, such as under shorter hanging items, consider adding a set of drawers.  I have this unit in a hard to access corner of my wardrobe and use it to store out of season knits and t-shirts.

Best for out of season clothes and shoes. If you have limited storage space like some of my clients, under the bed is a great place to store out-of-season clothes and shoes, as well as bags, shoes and clothes that you rarely wear.  I love the clear lids on these which make it easy to see what's inside.

Best for avoiding moths. Lavender bags are a great moth repellent and less toxic than moth balls. Great for if you have children or pets in the house.  If you have lavender in the garden you can make your own.  Put a small bag in each of the suit bags you have packed away and one in each area where you have clothes stored.

Jewellery Storage

I have seen and tried lots of options for storing jewellery. No matter how much I plan to put my jewellery away each night, and how cool the storage looks, I will not hang up individual earrings each night.  Here are some storage solutions that work for me.

Best for Necklaces and Bracelets.  Adhesive hooks can be placed on the side wall of the wardrobe of the backs of doors.  I used them in my old bedroom to store necklaces, bracelets and scarves. Be careful to stick to the weight limit of the hooks.  Not suitable for heavy jewellery or bags.

Best for Rings.  I have had my ring stand for as long as I can remember and I still love it.  It's a bit different to this one, but the same principles apply.  It has somewhere to neatly place the rings, and somewhere to drop them at the end of the day what I can't be bothered organising them.  It also works as a place to drop earrings so they don't look too messy.

Best for Smaller Earrings. I like to keep different types of jewellery in different boxes or locations.  This one looks nice and simple to use.  If you have more earrings make sure you still like them all, and if you do, try using one box at a time to reduce clutter.
