As a mom of an 8-year-old who loves reading, I’m always looking for stories that can keep his curiosity alive and take him beyond the usual children’s books. Along the way, I discovered something I didn’t even know existed, a whole category of fiction written specifically for kids like him. It’s called middle grade fiction, generally aimed at readers ages 8–12. But I didn’t want to limit this list to books written specifically for that age group. Instead, I’m collecting books I’d love for my young reader to discover, from magical worlds and exciting adventures to mysteries and unforgettable characters. So I started looking for Indonesian literary novels that I feel are enjoyable, meaningful, and approachable for young readers from around age 8. These are books I’d be happy to put into my child’s hands as their first steps into the wonderful world of Indonesian literature.
