items As a mom of an 8-year-old who loves reading, I’m always looking for stories that can keep his curiosity alive and take him beyond the usual children’s books. Along the way, I discovered something I didn’t even know existed, a whole category of fiction written specifically for kids like him. It’s called middle grade fiction, generally aimed at readers ages 8–12. But I didn’t want to limit this list to book...

Percy Jackson & the Olympians is one of the series I’m excited to introduce to my young reader. Following Percy, a seemingly ordinary boy who discovers that he’s actually a demigod, the series takes readers into a world of Greek mythology, monsters, quests, and unexpected adventures. I love how the books make mythology feel so fun and accessible.

The Famous Five is one of those childhood adventures I’d happily introduce to my 8 yo.
Following Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and their dog Timmy, each story is filled with mysteries, secret places, unexpected discoveries, and plenty of adventure.
I love how these books can make reading feel like an adventure of its own, while encouraging curiosity, friendship, courage, and a little bit of independence along the way.

The Secret Library
The Lost Library follows a mystery surrounding a little free library and the secrets hidden in a town’s past. As the characters search for answers, they uncover clues that connect people, stories, and long-forgotten events.
I think it’s a lovely choice for young readers who enjoy solving puzzles. It also celebrates the magic of books and reminds us that stories can bring a community together.

The Lost Library
This imaginative fantasy follows Nobody Owens, a boy raised by the inhabitants of a graveyard. His unusual childhood leads to adventures, mysteries, and lessons about growing up.
I love the originality of this story, but its darker atmosphere and supernatural themes may be better suited to older or more confident young readers.
