Beloved Children's Books

Closed Book emoji 22 items
Want to give a child a head start in life?  Put reading materials in the home.  It doesn't even matter what reading materials.  The number one predictor of a child's success is whether or not there was reading in their home.  My undergrad degree is in early childhood/K-3 education.  Here are some of my favorite children's books.

Babies and Toddlers

Board books and cloth books are great gifts for babies and toddlers!  They learn to hold a book and turn the pages.  As you read, follow the words with your finger, and they'll learn that words have meaning.  I've even had toddlers start to pick up sight words in their most beloved (and read repeatedly) books.

Babies and toddlers love Eric Carle's books.  The brightly colored simple illustrations appeal to their eyes and the repetitive predictable stories appeal to their love of the familiar.

When it comes to children's books, you can't go wrong with either Eric Carle or Bill Martin, Jr, and here you get both!  I taught toddlers in a preschool for a year or so when I was young.  I think I could still recite this book with little prompting.   The kids love the rhythm of the words, and Carle's illustrations are always a hit.

When I was teaching toddlers back in the day, the kids ALL loved this book.  We read it practically every day.  I think I can still recite the whole book even now!  “There is a house, a napping house, where everyone is sleeping in.  And in that house there is a granny…”
