Binge-worthy Television - Medical Dramas

Purple Star emoji 18 items
One of the staples of television has been the medical drama, and I've been a fan of the genre all my life. Everything from Quincy, ME and MASH to current hits like Grey's Anatomy and The Pitt.

Current Medical Dramas

If you like dramas, you've probably followed at least one set in a medical setting.  I'm currently binging The Pitt and Grey's Anatomy.  I've watched Watson, but I honestly am not sure how I feel about that show.  What other current medical dramas are you watching?

I love HBO dramas.  If HBO makes it, you know it's going to be a quality show.  I just wish they'd make more episodes per season.

I've watched Grey's Anatomy since the beginning, and loved most of the stories and characters over the years.

I watched the season, but I'm not as big a fan of this series as I am of The Pitt or Grey's Anatomy.

I've just started watching this.  I'm giving it a try, but the previews didn't really grab me which made me sad because I'm a Trekkie and I loved Zachary Quinto as Spock so I want to like it.

2000-2010

This decade was a good one for medical dramas.  Grey's Anatomy premiered followed by the spinoff Private Practice.  We also got House, Nurse Jackie, Nip/Tuck and more.

I like millions of others have loved this show from the very beginning.  I've continued to watch through all the cast changes and shakeups.  It's a great series with a mix of over the top drama and intimate stories of family and friends.

I loved House!  It was such a unique character at the time, though I can see how it's influenced the new series Watson in format and stories.

McDreamy's ex, Addison Montgomery, moves to LA and joins a private practice with some of her friends.  Eventually, McDreamy's little sister joined the cast before hopping back to Grey's Anatomy.

I've never watched this series myself, but I know it's a very popular series.  There's just something about it that turns me off.

90's Classics

Before there was Grey's Anatomy, there was ER.  This was the show that made George Clooney and Julianna Margulies household names, and introduced Noah Wyle.  But it wasn't the only great medical drama in the 90's.

This series set the standard for medical dramas in the 90s.  It wasn't as gritty as St. Elsewhere, but it still had some very powerful storylines.  And it has a young George Clooney, and very nerdy young Noah Wyle.

Chicago Hope was a rival to ER when it aired, but didn't have the same longevity.   Behind the scenes drama with that cast was part of the problem, but it was still an excellent series.

This series follows a woman doctor in the 1800s frontier.  It's at times sugary sweet, but it was still an enoyable series with a nice romantic storyline thrown in for good measure.

80's Classics

Calling my Gen X peeps!  Do you remember these classics?  I've been binging a couple of these series off and on lately, and they still stand up to time.

I binged the first couple seasons of this recently, and I did not remember just how many big stars got their start in this show including Denzel Washington.  And WOW did they get away with storylines back then that would NEVER get approved now on broadcast TV.

Yes.  This is a sequel to MASH.  I remember loving this series when it aired.

Yes, this is a comedy, but its also a drama.  The last episode aired 1983.  The final episode is still the most watched episode in television series.  And if you doubt that MASH is a drama, watch that episode.  Just have a box of tissues with you when you do.  Alan Alda should have won an Emmy for that episode alone, though he did win twice for lead actor in that series.  He also won twice each for writing and directing.

The OGs

Most of these pre-date my TV watching days, but I remember watching re-runs of Quincy, ME and of course, MASH.

The long running soap premiered in 1963.  I watched with the babysitter when I was a kid during the Luke and Laura era.  I still love that song. :)
