My philosophy for my flower beds is plant it, and if it lives buy more. If it struggles in one location I may dig it up and move it, but I don't want gardening to be my second job.

Flowering Perennials
I love daffodils! One of the first plants to come up in the spring. I plant them near and among other plants that bloom in mid-summer to fall.
Daffodil, Sun Catchers
Echinacea (aka Coneflower) tend to be hardy plants. This pretty variety blooms in an array of colors.
Echinacea, Warm Summer
This is a blend of sunflower varieties. I like sunflowers because they're tall and help fill in the back of your flower beds. They're also beneficial to the birds who come to eat the seeds.
Sunflower, Fun N Sun Blend
Zinnias are so easy to grow, but they spread! So keep an eye on them to keep them from taking over.
Zinnia, Giant Flowered Mixed Colors
Yarrow in all it's varieties is another easy to grow perennial that will keep coming back. Most varieties tolerate drought. So they won't die if you forget to water them…ask me how I know.
New Vintage 'Violet' - Yarrow
Asters bloom summer to fall so they're a great addition to your garden beds. They're still blooming when other flowers have died off.
Kickin Carmine Red Aster
Coreopsis are another hard to kill perennial I love to have in my garden beds. They do spread, but not invasively. This variety is a red and yellow, but most are some shade of yellow.
Daybreak Li'l Bang Coreopsis
Dianthus tend to be very short plants. They bloom most of the summer, and depending on the variety can smell just divine!
Coconut Surprise Carnation Dianthus Groundcover
Monarda are lovely plants to include in your flowerbeds. They're beneficial to bees and attract hummingbirds. Easy to grow and another drought tolerant plant if like me you tend to be a little lax with the watering schedule.
Monarda didyma (Bee Balm), Leading Lady Plum
I plant a variety of daylilies in my flower beds as well. There are so many varieties and they come in so many colors! Another plant that tolerates my benevolent neglect.
Daylily, Mighty Chestnut
These are great flowers to plant in problem areas. They grow about 2-3ft in height so they're perfect for filling in that middle area of the flower bed. Plant them around the eyesores in your flower beds like the water meter to help disguise them.
Black Eyed Susan, Rudbeckia
Perennial Herbs
I love having chives in my flower beds. It's great being able to just go cut some out of the garden when I want to top a baked potato. The chive blossoms are edible as well!
Chives, Dolores
Lavender can be a little more difficult to get started, but if you baby it at the beginning it will continue to come back year after year. The smell is divine. Tuck dried blooms into sachets to keep pests out of your closets. The blooms are also edible.
Lavender, Phenomenal
Rosemary is another perennial herb you can grow in your flower beds and have year after year.
Rosemary
Okay. All forms of mint are easy to grow…too easy to grow! They'll take over if you don't keep on top of them. When I do plant anything in the mint family, I plant it in a pot that I plant in the ground to help contain the roots. Honestly? Just plant it in a pot, not in the ground!
Mint, Kentucky Colonel
Another great herb to keep in your flower beds for fresh herbs to cook with.
Oregano, Italian
Plants to Avoid
Be aware there are plants you should NOT plant even if they're for sale commercially! This site provides information about invasive species from the USDA, but you should find a list local to your area as well.
Invasive Plants
Live in Indiana? Be aware that it's illegal to buy, sell, gift, barter, trade, etc. the 44 plants on this list, but you will still find them for sale at the big box stores. Just say no to Bradford Pears!
