Gettysburg - The Killer Angels
The books were written by Michael Shaara and his son Jeff. Michael Shaara wrote “The Killer Angels” which won the Pulitzer Prize and is the basis of the TNT 2-part miniseries, Gettysburg. I absolutely adore both the book and the miniseries. Everything about the miniseries was awesome. It was filmed on location at Gettysburg (at the time the only film that had ever done so). The music is just beautiful! The casting and actors are A list across the board. I HIGHLY recommend watching this.
All three of these novels were thoroughly researched through the first hand accounts of the men and women who lived it.

The Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the U.S. Civil War. I read this in high school, but not as assigned reading. It's a beautifully poignant novel of the events leading up to and through the battle of Gettysburg.

This was originally a 2 part mini-series on TNT. It was filmed on location at Gettysburg…the only movie or television series to have ever done so. Gettysburg: Extended Edition
The Battle of Little Round Top.
Chamberlain's Charge on Little Round Top - "Gettysburg" (1993)
The exact speech is fictional, but when Chamberlain marched his regiment to Gettysburg he did have 120 men considered deserters marching under guard with him. The men believed their enlistment was up and they refused to fight. He spoke to them before the battle. 117 of the 120 picked up arms and fought with him in the battle.
Colonel Joshua Chamberlain Speech
Jeff Shaara follows up his father's Pulitzer Prize winning novel with this second novel. The book isn't as poetically gut wrenching as his father's, but it is still a well written and researched novel of the leading figures of the Civil War.
Gods and Generals: A Novel of the Civil War|Paperback
Sequel to the TNT mini-series Gettysburg, but this film was released to the big screen. This movie wasn't as well done as the mini-series, but it was still a good movie.
Gods and Generals (Extended Director's Cut)
The final novel in this trilogy. This one didn't make it to the screen.

The epic 10 part HBO miniseries. Just like Gettysburg, everything about this miniseries was awesome. I could watch it again and again. I love just listening to the music.
Easy Company of the 101st Airborne in the European theatre of WWII. This book was made famous when it was adapted into an HBO mini-series. This is one case where the screen did justice to the book.

Schindler's List
I'd like to believe that this book and movie don't need a description, but then there are adults in the U.S. that think that The Diary of Anne Frank is fiction…so… This is based on true events. The final scene of the movie was filmed at Schindler's actual grave and the people leaving stones on the grave were people he saved and their descendents.
I've not read the novel, but the movie is such gut wrenching piece of cinema, I don't think I could bear to read it.

The movie Apollo 13 was based on Jim Lovell's book, The Lost Moon.
I haven't read the book, but I've seen the movie MANY times. I do like reading the first hand accounts, and this book was written by Jim Lovell, played by Tom Hanks in the movie, who commanded Apollo 13.
