These are some of my favorite books that I loved as a kid (and even as an adult!). They are clean, with many teaching valuable historical facts and also lessons on resilience. As a Christian mom, I love getting to now share these books with my kids!

A story about a boy and his racoon - It gives a glimpse into life in America during WWII.
Rascal (Puffin Modern Classics) - Books
A hilarious book about a family taking care a family of penguins in their home.
Mr. Popper's Penguins (Newbery Honor Book)
This book is about a boy who was stranded on an island with an older man. While more intense for younger readers, it's still a great read/listen for preteens.
The Cay (Laurel-Leaf Books) by Theodore Taylor
A story of a boy who survives a plane crash and lives in the wilderness for weeks until he is eventually rescued. There is more books to this series, but I still think this is the best one.

Another story of survival, as a young boy holds down his family homestead while his dad goes on a trip to collect the rest of the family.
The Sign of the Beaver: Newbery Honor
No middle school book list would be complete without this classic series of a family traveling west and settling down in different locations. Great for all ages of children!
