My first poem! This started my entire creative journey to entrepreneurship.
I never really considered myself talented. I knew I could write. I got good grades on writing assignments in school and college. But I never imagined it could become something. Then, in 2004, I wrote one silly poem for kicks. And once I realized there was more where that came from, I was so excited. I didn't discover writing that day. I discovered something in myself. And I've been following it ever since. Coincidentally, while I was finding myself, I was also losing something very important to me. I have more ideas than I have places to put them. And for a long time, I thought that was a problem. I can be thinking about a room and suddenly understand something about a cake. I can be planning a trip and start thinking about value in real estate. I can taste something and immediately start wondering what would make it better. One idea leads to another, which leads to another, which leads to... Well. You see my problem. 😂 For years, the hardest part wasn't having ideas. It was figuring out what to do with all of them. Which ones become businesses? Which ones become products? Which ones are simply things I know? Which ones need more time? And which ones should remain mine until I'm ready? I'm beginning to understand that maybe they were never as disconnected as they appeared. There's a common thread in almost everything I do: I notice things. How elements work together. What's missing. What's unnecessary. What could work better. What could feel better. What could become something completely different. Maybe that's why I can move between spaces, food, travel, property, writing and business without it feeling strange to me. I'm doing the same thing in different mediums. I'm composing. Yes, I stalked a rug for two years. 😆 I saw this rug long before I had the right room—or the right price—for it. But I knew what I wanted, so I waited. When the time finally came, she had a job to do. This is our family room. Three grandsons. Gamer sons. Hanging out, laughing, playing, living. I wanted the room to feel energetic and upbeat, so I let the rug be the star. And here's something I wish more people understood about design: Every room in your house does not have to match. Your rooms should relate to you, but they can have completely different personalities because they have completely different jobs. My family room can be bold, playful and energetic. My bedroom can be dark, romantic and quiet. Same home. Same person. Different assignment. Good design isn't about making everything match. It's about making each space work for the life that happens there. And sometimes that means stalking a rug for two years. 😂 Signature Spaces Luxury isn't about spending more.
