Pack Like a Pro On Your Next Trip to Ecuador

Purple Star emoji 12 items
We've traveled to Ecuador many times over the past few years. And on most trips, we end up in different microclimates, even when focused only in and around Quito. The trick to packing is to bring items that can double up (Sierra and Amazon, Hiking th...

Merino wool t-shirts are a great option for travelers as they do not need to be washed as often as other tees. A short sleeve t-shirt is a great option doubles as a stand alone or a base layer.

Easily my favorite sun hoody - thin, light, and comes in lots of great colors. Another great layering item for the Andes and can be worn alone on a warm day in the Amazon.

It might be the Portlander in me, but I can't pass up a quality flannel shirt. I own two from Muji and can't get enough of them. They layer well, especially with those Merino Tees.

Kuhl's latest hiking pants are sleek and neat… and can double up for a nice night out (pretty top, a scarf from the market, and my Docs).

Your favorite pair of blue jeans - mine are Levi's 501s. If you are looking to blend, a good jean is far better than hiking pants, especially in the city. However, these can get warm in the Amazon so I limit myself to a single pair.

Nothing says tourist more than a pair of striped pants from any artisan's market in Ecuador. But sometimes, we just have to own who we are! Thin, lightweight, and great for the Amazon, especially back at the lodge after a day of hiking or canoing.

Shoes

Shoes are so personal… wear what makes you comfortable as long as they have good treads. Many of the trails are in lousy shape (if you are a hiker) and city streets are often as treacherous as a trail.

I love my Docs. They are comfortable for long city walks and can be dressed up for a fancy restaurant or down for a trendy bar. In a pinch, they also manage many a hiking trail… though not a muddy one. For those, most lodges have boots for you to use...

If I plan on spending more time hiking than in the city, I leave the Docs at home and replace them with a pair of hiking boots in a dark color with laces to match. That way I can wear them with slightly nicer clothes and get away with it.

Outer Layers

A good fleece, a rain layer, and a wrap that you can buy at the local market.

I love my Craft rain jacket. It is light weight and not overly warm, making it great for the Amazon. But it is loose enough for me to wear a fleece layer if I'm in the Andes on a cold and rainy day.

I add a lightweight fleece layer - warm enough on its own and when combined with my rain jacket, plenty of protection on a rainy day. Pro tip: a fleece comes in handy even in the hot Amazon which can experience cool temperatures in some seasons, espe...

I was gifted an Ecuadorian shawl when I lived in Quito. It's one of my favorite travel layers. It makes a great blanket on the plane. It folds up to become a pillow. It hides my camera while I'm touring downtown. In short, it is a multi-purpose tool ...

If you are going to carry a purse, make it a cross body bag with an adjustable strap. You can snug it close to hide under your Ecuadorian shawl.
