I work for a children’s autism center, and the kids I work with certainly gravitate towards certain books, toys, and other media. I’m here to share some of those favorites for whether you’re a children’s therapist like me, a teacher, a parent, or oth...

Books!

Whether the child is ready to read or just loves a good story time, these are wonderful books, many of which are classics that have been around for some of our childhoods too.

Pete the Cat is always a favorite for my clients. They teach great problem-solving skills, how to be a good friend, and showing it’s okay when things don’t turn out the way you expect. Because “it’s all good!” and things are still “groovy!”💙

Pete the Cat books

Classics by Dr. Seuss are still wonderful teaching tools for early readers as well as just a fun story time break. They teach rhyming, counting, colors, your ABCs, as well as toleration of new things like eating green eggs and ham.

Dr. Seuss's Beginner Book Collection: The Cat in the Hat; One Fish ...

This book coupled with Mr. Elephant’s sung rendition of the words (available to listen on YouTube and Spotify) are a favorite of some of my clients. It is a great early learning book for colors and animals.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You... book by Eric Carle

I love Todd Parr books, not only for their unique yet simple art style, but also for their sweet messages about being a good friend, managing your feelings, and being who you are. I love the books “It’s Okay To Be Different” and “The Feelings Book”. ...

Todd Parr Colorful Board Books for Kids

Toys

This is a big favorite at my center. This ball drop toy makes great sounds with the balls rolling down the wooden track and hitting a bell on the way down, plus it has really cute art on the sides. It comes with three purple balls, one with a smiley ...

Janod Wooden Caterpillar Ball Track Ball Drop Toy

Many of the kids at our center like this, and I bought my own set after realizing how much I liked it too. My set of 20 has 3 pieces filled with rainbow spherical beads, 3 pieces filled with kinetic sand, and 2 pieces filled with bigger beads- one st...

Jelly Blox Creative Kit

This is a really fun ramp set. It plays sounds and music when you tip the top green section, sending the cars down. It’s wider than a standard hot wheel car and comes with two cars that fit the track, but smaller cars can fit and will usually make it...

Fisher-Price Little People Hot Wheels Racing Loops Tower

This chair is a great option for kids- especially those with sensory needs like kids with ADHD and/or autism. It holds up to 220 lbs and can help improve focus, balance, and body coordination. It has a non-slip base and anti-tip design as well, and c...

Sensory Spinner Chair

Our autism center has a large Magna-Tiles set for kids to build what they want. I’ve seen kids build houses, castles, roads, cars, trucks, and more. A child who really loves vehicles made a car wash once.

Magnetic Tile Building Sets For Kids

This magnetic cupcake set is a big hit with our kids. You can mix and match the wrappers and icings to different cupcakes, or even make muffins if you leave out the icing. It’s great for functional pretend play and would go great as a set for a play ...

Magnetic Bake & Play Cupcakes Toy Set, Pretend ...

This ice cream set works similarly to the cupcake one and will magnetically attach together to make your completed dessert. You can use the magnet scoopers to grab the ice cream and put it on the cone, and you can stack ice cream flavors!

Magnetic Scoop & Play Ice Cream

This is a great mess-free magnetic sorter. It comes with a little magnet pen to slide across the glass screen. Each cone has 1 more ball matching its color than the previous cone. The ice cream design is very fun as well.

Konijiwa Montessori Magnetic Color and Number Maze

Videos

This is a wonderful animated YouTube channel for kids that creates modern pop and R&B versions of nursery rhymes, plus original songs that teach kids as well. The visuals are simple and not too overstimulating, and the songs are very catchy.

Gracie's Corner - YouTube

I grew up with Noggin on cable tv, and I’m so glad Noggin/Nick Jr. still have an app for their programming and old hosts Moose A. Moose and Zee. They offer old and new programming, so there’s the shows I remember, like Little Bear and original Blue’s...

This is a great sensory table to use for sand, water, and other potentially messy fidgets to contain them in a designated space and still offer a child that play. This is a huge favorite at the center for the kids. Water play and other similar sensor...

Preschool Sand & Water Table - Natural Colors

This wagon has 2 seats, seat belts, cup holders, an easy door latch, and a storage compartment under the rear seat. The listed maximum weight it carries is 75 lbs, although I think I’ve carried a little more with two kids in the wagon, and it’s still...
