I am a background actor, or extra, in movies and TV shows in Eastern North Carolina. You will hear both terms used but background is more the norm now. Holding is reference to where background stays and eats meals while sets are being put together for scenes. Sometimes they will need background to bring props with them, so some of these items can double a props.
