“Popcorn?! Not The Balls”- A New Halloween Tradition
This list is very special to me. Yes, it’s just groceries, but it’s more than that. The following story led to a new family tradition. Let me explain… Last year we had extended family members who struggled with food insecurity. They were embarrassed by it & didn’t tell us until mid summer. We immediately started putting in Walmart grocery orders for them to pick up. When Halloween prepping started we were at Sam's Club looking at candy. Looking around I felt guilty because we were about to buy full size candy bars, while someone near & dear to me couldn’t afford a meal. It hit me like a ton of bricks- how many trick or treaters struggle with food insecurity? Which of our neighbors? What friends? Which kids? I decided then we were going to pass out food & not just candy. We bought the candy bars. The entire way home (hour+) I was thinking what foods work well for trick or treaters? What fits in a pumpkin bucket or bag, is shelf stable, & portable? Below is a compilation of what we did last year, what we plan on doing this year, & things I’m still considering if it would work or not. So this list is primarily Sam’s Club, Walmart, & Aldi. *We were able to afford to do this due to my dad helping us. He won a gift card day before Halloween at a local grand opening of an Aldi. Which he used every bit to help make this a success*
