Surabaya is Indonesia’s second largest city and the second most important commercial and industrial center after Jakarta. It is home to three million people, a large port and Indonesia’s navy. The old city is situated around Jembatan Merah (Red Bridge) and Kota train station. The city center and major top-end hotel area is around J. Pemuda. The airport is 15 kilometers outside of town. There are good train connection to Jakarta, Yogyakarta and a ferry to Bali. Most travelers don’t stay here any longer than they have to: often until they can the next plane or train out.

If you're visiting the Toronto area and you have a couple of extra days, I highly recommend you hop in the car and drive up the 400 (the major highway that runs north of Toronto and is the most direct route to this region). Canadian's refer to this spot as Cottage Country. It's a mixture of estate lake homes, pass down generational cottages, resorts, hotels, and camp sites. The Philippines is a great place for a vacation. I have been there, rented a car, drove around to really experience the country and its people. What I love about it besides the beautiful spots is it is English friendly. Unlike other places, most everyone there speaks English, which is a HUGE asset. The other big benefit is that that many things are cheap there because of the currency exchange rate between the Peso and Dollar. Your dollar goes a long way there. It is a very diverse country but there are places you must see.
