I've been to the Dells more than four times over the years—sometimes with my family, sometimes with my husband—and it’s always a nostalgic mix of classic attractions and discovering what’s new (or sadly, what’s no longer there). Each visit has had its own flavor depending on who I was with and what was open that season. Some places we stumbled into and ended up loving, others were longtime favorites we kept going back to—until they disappeared (RIP to a few lost gems).
This list is a collection of everything I’ve actually spent time and money on—meals, attractions, shows, tours, you name it. From waterparks and kitschy museums to romantic dinners or lazy river floats, these are my real experiences. If you're planning a trip, these are the places I’d tell you to check out based on firsthand visits. I’ll keep updating it when we go back (and we always do). Just know that the Dells is always evolving—so while not everything sticks around, the memories sure do.
In 2017 I did a road trip to south Dakota and Colorado. I live in southern Illinois so I traveled north to south Dakota and made a few stops along the way. After going through South Dakota, we drove down to Colorado, and then back home. This list will focus on what we did in South Dakota only. I skipped a couple of places that tend to show up on tourists lists because I didn't have time or it was out of the way. I skipped Deadwood and and the Crazy Horse memorial. I saw the Crazy Horse memorial from the road. I am sure there is plenty more to do in South Dakota, but this is what I did and enjoyed. My 7 year old daughter and I used our park hopper passes to go back again and again to the Yeti roller coaster and the Pandora/Avatar ride. I was literally so amazed by how beautiful this park was and we enjoyed just walking around and seeing all the sights. On average, according to my iphone, we walked 15 to 20 miles per day.
