I lived in Garmisch for 3 years, these are my favorite spots from more of a local perspective. Garmisch is mountain paradise whether you’re super outdoorsy and adventurous or outdoorsy like you like eating on the patio. This area is wonderful for families with tons of outdoor activities, playgrounds, and family-friendly hiking trails.

ROAD TRIP! Seems like a great idea until you're trapped in a space smaller than Harry's cupboard under the stairs with bored children who have energy in spades! With four high-energy kids, I've learned a few things that make traveling just a little easier. 1) Keep them entertained while the car is moving. 2) Make sure that entertainment won't be messy or space-eating. 3) Snacks & Drinks are essential at all times. 4) Rest Stops are the unsung heroes of travelling with kids. USE THEM. And not just the toilets. Use the grills, the grassy spaces, and the playground! 5) Pack as much food as you can, so you won't be eating out for every meal.

Every time I visit a new city, my first priority is to check out the local movie scene: drive-ins? Indie theaters? Screenings in the park? I love them all, but my absolute favorite places to visit are historic old movie palaces, a handful of which are still in operation as working movie theaters after periods of restoration. Largely built in the silent film era (though built well into 1940s), these movie palaces represent a time when moviegoing first became a “destination” event for Americans (as movies changed from novelties to works of art), embodying a sense of glamour and excess that you just don't find in contemporary movie theaters.
