Favorite places to go and eat, hike, relax nearby

When we first got into backpacking we were broke and bought products on the cheaper side. Some worked out most of them didn't. We then researched and bought quality. Sometimes that worked and sometimes it didn't. Eventually we found what worked for us. Weight played a big factor along with durability. These are products I love and stand by.

I took a 10 day trip in Washington State asked out of Seattle. The distance traveled was 1700 miles. We traveled in late May, so there was still a lot of snow on the high trails. We enjoyed smaller crowds in the areas we visited and our trip ended Memorial Day Saturday. We did some hiking, visited National Parks and enjoyed the San Juan Islands. This was my first time to visit the state. Overall, it was a great snapshot of Northwestern Washington and so many places I’d love to spend more time.

Every time I visit a new city, my first priority is to check out the local movie scene: drive-ins? Indie theaters? Screenings in the park? I love them all, but my absolute favorite places to visit are historic old movie palaces, a handful of which are still in operation as working movie theaters after periods of restoration. Largely built in the silent film era (though built well into 1940s), these movie palaces represent a time when moviegoing first became a “destination” event for Americans (as movies changed from novelties to works of art), embodying a sense of glamour and excess that you just don't find in contemporary movie theaters. Seeing a movie in an old movie palace reminds you of why you fell in love with cinema in the first place: the stars! The glamour! The drama!
